Mandela Day

                                      Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.

It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.

It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy; it is a global movement to honour his life’s work and to change the world for the better.

International Nelson Mandela Day is observed every year on July 18 to mark the birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela. This day is popularly known as 67 Minutes Mandela day. Nelson Mandela was the South African President who fought for 67 years for social justice and democracy.

He is referred to as the “Father of the Nation” and was the first black head of the state. His contributions include service to humanity as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker, and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. The day is an occasion for everyone to take action and inspire change.

The idea of celebrating his birthday was first initiated by Mandela himself. On his 90th birthday, Mandela said “It is time for new hands to lift the burden”. Since 2010, this day has been celebrated as the birthday of the iconic personality, Nelson Mandela.

He received more than 250 honours including the Nobel prize. In 2014, the UN General Assembly introduced the Nelson Mandela Prize. This award was dedicated to the people who lived their lives in service of humanity. He is remembered for his role in the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world.

This day is celebrated across the globe through fundraising, art exhibitions, events, conferences, and concerts. Organisations work for violence against women, genocide, and crime to create awareness among the people.

The theme for this year is “One hand can feed Another”.

This day plays a significant role in honoring the legacy of Nelson Mandela, the former South African President. This day is also known as ‘46664 ’ and was originally launched to create awareness about HIV/AIDS.
